How does Beat It work?

Beat It has three steps. First, scan your ticket — upload a photo or type in the details. Our AI checks your ticket for grounds to challenge it. Second, we generate a professional appeal letter tailored to your specific situation. Third, you check it and tap send: where we can send it (by email, or through the council's own website), we send it in your name, on your instruction. Where we can't, we prepare it for you to send — on a council's own online form the app guides you through submitting it, and if only post works we give you a ready-to-print PDF that you print, sign and post. You get notified when they respond.

Which councils and authorities can you appeal to?

We support appeals to councils in England and Wales (PCNs issued under the Traffic Management Act 2004), private parking operators (BPA and IPC members) for parking in England and Wales, and DVLA-linked charges. We do not currently take tickets from Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland or the United States. If your authority isn't listed, contact us.

How long do appeals take?

It depends which stage you are at, and the two council stages are not the same. For a council PCN in England or Wales, an informal challenge has no statutory time limit at all — the Government's guidance for England only suggests councils reply within 14 days. Formal representations are different: if they reach the council in time, it must consider them and serve a decision within 56 days, and if it misses that deadline your representations are deemed accepted and it must cancel the notice and refund anything paid in relation to it. (It covers parking tickets, and bus-lane and moving-traffic tickets outside London, and clean-air tickets in England outside London; other London tickets run under separate London rules.) If your council parking ticket arrived by post there is no informal stage — the postal PCN is itself the notice you make formal representations against. Private operators in the BPA or IPC schemes must respond within 28 days under their code of practice, or acknowledge your appeal and tell you how long it will take.

What if my appeal is refused?

A refusal is not the end — but which independent body you go to depends on who issued the ticket, and the two systems are completely separate. For a council PCN: if your informal challenge is refused the council serves a Notice to Owner, you then make formal representations, and if those are refused you can appeal free to an independent tribunal — the Traffic Penalty Tribunal for England outside London and for Wales, or London Tribunals for London PCNs. For a private parking charge: you appeal to the operator first, and if they refuse it and belong to one of the two industry schemes you can appeal free to POPLA (British Parking Association operators) or the IAS (International Parking Community operators); an operator in neither scheme does not have to offer one. POPLA is free; the IAS is free for a standard appeal made in time, but charges for a late non-standard one. Scotland and Northern Ireland run different systems with different bodies. Beat It prepares your paperwork at each stage.

Is Beat It a law firm?

No. Beat It is a form-filling and sending service, not a law firm. We don't argue your case as your representative, and we do not provide legal advice. For complex cases involving court action, we recommend consulting a qualified solicitor.

Question 6

How do I cancel my subscription?

Accepted Answer

Go to your account settings and click "Cancel subscription". Your access continues until the end of your current billing period. No cancellation fees. If you have trouble cancelling, email support@usebeatit.com and we'll sort it immediately.

Question 7

How do I delete my account?

Accepted Answer

Go to account settings → "Delete account". This permanently deletes all your appeals, emails, uploaded photos, and personal data within 30 days. This action cannot be undone. Alternatively, email privacy@usebeatit.com and we will process the deletion manually.

Is my data safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Your data is stored in Supabase (EU-hosted, GDPR compliant). Ticket photos are stored encrypted. We use HTTPS everywhere. We do not sell your data or use it for advertising. Your ticket details are sent to our AI provider (Anthropic) to generate the appeal letter — they do not use API data to train their models. Full details in our Privacy Policy.

Which countries do you operate in?

Beat It currently takes tickets issued in England and Wales only. We do not currently take tickets from Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland or the United States.

Question 10

What types of tickets can I appeal?

Accepted Answer

We handle: UK council Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs), private parking charge notices (PCNs from ANPR/CCTV), bus lane charges, congestion charge disputes, Dart Charge (Dartford Crossing) notices, and similar charges issued in England and Wales. We do not currently handle speeding fines, red light fines, or criminal traffic offences.

How is the success fee charged?

The success fee is a flat amount, only charged if your appeal is successful — meaning the council or operator confirms the fine has been cancelled. It's £3 on every plan. We track outcomes via the replies we receive about your appeal, and you see the exact amount at the point of sale before you pay. It is charged automatically to the default payment method on your billing account. On a personal plan started from 4 October 2026, that is the card you subscribe with, or a payment method you later set as your default in the billing portal. On a fleet plan, it is the default payment method on your organisation's account: the card you subscribe with, unless your organisation already has a default payment method saved, and you can change it in the billing portal. If there is no default payment method on your account, the fee is not taken automatically. If you don't win, no success fee is ever charged.

Question 12

Can I appeal a private parking ticket?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Private parking tickets (issued by operators like NCP, Euro Car Parks, Excel Parking, etc.) are challenged through a different route from council PCNs. Common grounds include inadequate signage, grace periods not observed, vehicle exempt (blue badge, emergency), or the operator lacking DVLA authority. We specialise in these.

I've already paid the fine — can I still appeal?

Accepted Answer

You can ask. Paying doesn't automatically close the case. We prepare your appeal the normal way and ask the council or operator to cancel the ticket and refund what you paid. If they accept your representations they must cancel it and refund you. For a council ticket in England or Wales, the same applies if your formal challenge reached them in time and they don't serve their decision on it within 56 days (parking tickets, and bus-lane or moving-traffic tickets outside London, or clean-air tickets in England outside London). Refunds aren't guaranteed (paying can be treated as accepting the charge), so if you plan to appeal it's best not to pay first — but where a ticket was issued in error it's well worth challenging. Just tell us it's already paid and we word the appeal accordingly.

Question 14

The ticket is for a hire, lease or rental vehicle — can you help?

Accepted Answer

Yes. For most parking, bus-lane and moving-traffic tickets, the law lets the hire company pass responsibility to the person who was actually hiring the vehicle, who can then appeal in their own name. One exception: London bus-lane tickets. The grounds for challenging one do not include a hire-company ground, and the law presumes the registered keeper (usually the hire firm) is the owner.

What if my council only takes appeals by post?

You're still covered. Most appeals go in online or by email: where we can send it (by email, or through the council's own website), we send it in your name once you tap send; where we can't, the app guides you through the council's own online form step by step. If an appeal can only go by post, we give you a free ready-to-print PDF — you print, sign and post it. All from the Beat It app or website. You're never stuck just because a council only takes post.
