Yellow Box - Right Turn Exception
You ARE permitted to enter a yellow box junction and wait if turning right, provided your exit is clear except for oncoming traffic.
Legal basis
Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984; Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016, Schedule 9, Part 7, paragraph 11 — paragraph 11(1) creates the prohibition on entering a box junction where the vehicle has to stop inside it because of stationary vehicles, and paragraph 11(3) excepts a driver who enters "for the purpose of turning right" and stops only for so long as the right turn is blocked by an oncoming vehicle, or by another vehicle stationary while waiting to turn right. Paragraph 11(3) applies to a box junction within paragraph 11(6)(a) — one at a junction between two or more roads.
How to identify this in your case
If you were turning right and waiting for a gap in oncoming traffic, this is a permitted manoeuvre.
Sample appeal wording
Sample wording to adapt and send yourself — it may not fit your notice or the stage you are at.
I entered the box junction intending to turn right. My exit road was clear and I stopped within the box only because oncoming traffic prevented me from completing the turn. Paragraph 11(3) of Part 7 of Schedule 9 to the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 provides that the prohibition in paragraph 11(1) does not apply to a driver who enters a box junction for the purpose of turning right and stops only for so long as the turn is prevented by an oncoming vehicle, or by another vehicle stationary while waiting to turn right. That is what happened here, and no contravention occurred.
