Yellow Box - Right Turn Exception

You may enter a yellow box at a junction between roads to turn right, and wait in it for as long as oncoming traffic, or another vehicle stopped while waiting to turn right, prevents the turn. The exception does not apply to a box on a roundabout or gyratory, along a narrow two-way road away from any junction, or beside a fire, police or ambulance station entrance.

Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984; Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016, Schedule 9, Part 7, paragraph 11 — paragraph 11(1) creates the prohibition on entering a box junction where the vehicle has to stop inside it because of stationary vehicles, and paragraph 11(3) excepts a driver who enters "for the purpose of turning right" and stops only for so long as the right turn is blocked by an oncoming vehicle, or by another vehicle stationary while waiting to turn right. Paragraph 11(3) applies to a box junction within paragraph 11(6)(a) — one at a junction between two or more roads.
