New York law lists exactly what a parking ticket must state: the plate number, plate type, registration expiration date, the vehicle MAKE, and body type, plus the violation details. If any required element is omitted, misdescribed, or illegible, the law says the violation "shall be dismissed upon application" — the judge has no discretion once the defect is real. A ticket that says HONDA when you drive a Toyota, or SUBN when your registration says 4DSD, is a dismissal as of right for NY-registered vehicles (out-of-state descriptions only need to be reasonably accurate). Two things to know: the vehicle's COLOR is NOT a required element — a wrong color alone wins nothing — and you must actually raise the defect when you dispute the ticket; nobody checks it for you.

NY Vehicle & Traffic Law § 238(2) (required elements: plate designation, plate type, expiration date, make or model, body type) and § 238(2-a)(b): information required to be inserted that is "omitted…, misdescribed, or illegible" means the violation "shall be dismissed upon application of the person charged". Applies in NYC and the other Article 2-B adjudication cities (Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers). NYC Department of Finance publishes the same rule as "Required Elements in a Ticket".
