A single yellow line only bans parking during certain hours, and the council must give drivers adequate information about what those hours are — normally an upright time plate, or a zone entry sign showing the same hours. How to identify this in your case

Were you on a single (not double) yellow line? Walk the street and photograph the line where you parked plus everything nearby: is there any upright yellow 'no waiting' plate showing the hours, and is there a controlled parking zone entry sign at the way you drove in showing the same hours? If neither exists, or the plate hours differ from when you were ticketed, photograph the whole street frontage to prove the absence.

I make representations against this PCN for contravention 01 on the ground that the alleged contravention did not occur and/or there has been a procedural impropriety. The single yellow line at the location indicates a part-time prohibition of waiting, yet there was no upright time plate at or near the location, and no zone entry sign on my route into the area, indicating the times of the restriction. The Traffic Signs Manual (Chapter 3, para 14.1.2) makes clear that where restriction times are not shown on a zone entry sign, upright signs must be provided. Regulation 18 of SI 1996/2489 required the council to place signs giving adequate information as to the effect of its order. I put the council to strict proof, by site photographs and a signage plan, that adequate and lawful signing of the times of the restriction was in place at the material time.
